the original painting measured 32x 38 cms. and was painted in pastel on rag mat board

My first sighting of Kylie the leopard was on a morning drive not far out of Mwamba Bush camp, however she was up a tree and well camouflaged among the leaves and I hoped to see her later in a more open position. Our afternoon/evening drive eclipsed all previous leopard sightings so far with a very close and prolonged encounter again with the beautiful and apparently placid Kylie who posed in front of our vehicle then paraded towards us before casually strolling off to join her cub who, unlike his mother, was camera shy and remained hidden. Named Kylie because like her namesake (according to Derek Shenton), she is small but perfect, Kylie lived up to her reputation.

the original painting measured 36 x 46 cms.

and was painted in acrylics on velour board

My initial sighting of this beautiful golden lion was on my first afternoon game drive from Shenton’s Kaingo Camp. He had taken over a kill made by two lionesses. Later on that afternoon we came across his two brothers. The Mwamba pride is headed by a coalition of three golden lions almost identical except for their individual scar markings they have collected in fights and hunts. Unfortunately this lion temporarily had a bad leg injury so he was easy to find most days as he wasn’t moving around over a large territory.

There was one very funny incident when we spotted a group of people from a distant camp getting ready for their morning tea and disembarking from their vehicle right in front of the tree under which this lion liked to spend his day resting in the shade. Just when our guide thought he should do something to warn them, their guide spotted his mistake and their was a mad scramble as people, tables etc. were hurled back into the vehicle.

We had an early morning game drive the day we left camp and managed to farewell some of our favorite new wildlife acquaintances including this magnificent lion who, along with two lionesses were staking out a fast depleting waterhole. This is a painting of the unfortunately nicknamed ‘Limpy’, a true survivor, and my golden lion highlighted by the early morning light.

the original painting measured 38 cms. Diameter

and was painted in mixed media on archival quality rag mat board

I met this young girl when I visited Kabali village on the way into Shenton’s camp in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. About 60 people (including children), live in this village of about 20 households and they are from the Kunda tribe. There were only about half this number of people there when I visited, mostly women and children and I was very kindly welcomed though at first they were rather perplexed by the reason for my visit. Once my guide explained that I was interested in finding out more about their lifestyle and was an artist, everybody relaxed and sang me a welcome song and we even danced (to much laughter), as the children joined in. Then they took me on a short tour of the village and explained how they managed mostly on subsistence farming and the trading of their woven palm leaf mats .

I wanted to reflect this life in the mat-like texture of the background and the use of earthy colors. The little girls hair was sparse and really did stand out stiffly and to a point, which gave her a cute pixie-like appearance . The background was made by impressing texture medium with a pattern and then painting it with acrylic. The hair is painted in acrylic with gloss medium added, her skin is painted in pastel and the dress is composed of two different woven fabrics glued down as a flat pattern and then painted with acrylic paints.

The original painting measures 28 x 23 cms.

painted in mixed media on archival rag mat board

I met this charming 3 year old girl when I was shopping for my grandson at the Zambezi Sun Hotel near Victoria Falls, Zambia. Dianna’s mother owned one of the shops attached to the hotel. Dianna was ‘helping’ her mother and aunt in the shop and had patiently sat for 2 hours whilst her aunt had added these wound hair extensions to make this hair style.

To make this painting, after carefully friskit filming my drawing, I painted the background with an imprinted texture medium with acrylic colors added. The hair is painted using thick acrylic paint. Dianna’s skin is painted in pastels and the dress is composed of plain fabric adhered to the board and then painted. there is an additional overlay of the fabric flower pieces.
