This scene seems typical of life lived in the more modern larger villages where businesses use every available space, and a highly social everyday life is experienced on the streets. Here is a woman with a simple treadle sewing machine who has set up a ‘fashion salon’ on the footpath. She doesn’t need electricity. Her customers and friends can sit and chat with her as she works, and her young child can play on the street next to her with all the other children
