Samburu Beauty 2 – Kenya
The original painting measured 42 x 70 cms. and was painted in mixed media
The Samburu District is in Northern Kenya. The Samburu are a proud cattle herding, warrior race, who have age set rituals similar to the Maasai tribe. The women adorn themselves with a multitude of brightly colored, beaded necklaces which often include modern materials like keys, buttons and chains. They also groom themselves using red ochre around their neck and rub fat into their beads to make them glisten. Many married women wear thin metal ornamental crosses, thought to have derived from Ethiopian crosses, on the front of their headbands.
