Rialto Bridge
The original painting measured 49 x 76 cms. and was painted in mixed media
The Rialto Bridge is at the geographical centre of the city, and until the C19th, was the only means of crossing the Grand Canal on foot. There are vaporetti (ferries), gondolas and other water transport buzzing about as people cross over the bridge, which has a central thoroughfare lined with shops.
This is one of the traditional mask shapes you see in Venice. The painting was made in the same manner as in the painting of Piazza San Marco. In both cases it took me a long time to paint the small scenes on the headpieces and make the jingle bells and pearls stand out.
