Whilst in Namibia, we stayed at a place called Okonjima, and here we were taken out on the “ Bushman’s walk”. Our guide Dax, had spent some time living and studying the traditional Bushmen or San people. Over the three kilometre walk, he explained and demonstrated aspects of their life and culture. The Bushmen are considered survivors of the original indigenous people that inhabited much of southern Africa. They were a hunter/gatherer society with a nomadic lifestyle that once lived in harmony with their environment, but whose people are now struggling to come to terms with the modern world. We saw traces of this ancient culture everywhere we travelled in Namibia, from their expressive and delicate cave paintings to their rock etchings.
