Afternoon Glow
The original painting measures 74 x 52 cms. and is painted in mixed media
Using the Carnival mask as a central theme, my paintings depict some of the iconic imagery that combine to make the magic of Venice. They also display a slightly dreamlike quality, because, in our memory we retain the mood of a place rather than the picture perfect image.
This painting shows some of Venice’s classic icons – the church of Santa Maria della Salute, Riva Degli Schiavoni, the columns of San Marco and Teodora, as well as the Gondola and Carnivale mask. On this afternoon a light mist came in and magnified the glow from the sunset light.
One of the unique aspects of my work is the technique on the masks. They are made with braid, lace, fabric, feathers etc., all placed as a flat pattern, and painted so as to give a ‘trompe l’oeil’ or three dimensional effect.
