African Icon – Okhandja, Namibia
The original painting measured 40 x 55 cms. and was painted in mixed media
As a mother I found it easier to relate to the women and children we met on this trip in Namibia as I could more easily put myself in their shoes, and wonder how I might cope, were I faced with the same day to day hardships and difficulties. I was constantly astounded with the strength and resilience of these women.
This is a painting of one of the women we met, who was looking after a stall at the woodcarver’s market at Okhandja. Beautifully dressed herself, she had two little girls with her that were her pride and joy. Both the children were ‘all dolled up’ in pink, frilly, nylon frocks, that were covered in all the dust and grime of the markets! As she introduced her daughters to me, her face took on that special mother’s glow we all recognize.
